ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY TARGETS FOR OPEN YOUR EYES AND TELL ME WHAT YOU SEE

Inspired by the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals and responding to the global challenges they recognise, the following Environmental Sustainability decisions were taken by the members of the OYE project.

REPERTOIRE

OYE is an artistic response to the climate crisis. The programme includes repertoire from underrepresented composers and poets, ensuring a diverse voice and perspective.

PREPARATION/MEETINGS

  • Planning meetings took place online to minimise travel

  • Artistic meetings with students took place online to reduce in-person rehearsal days

TRANSPORT

  • Boat and train were prioritised over air travel

  • Public transport was used rather than taxis

  • Participants walked where possible

ACCOMMODATION

  • Accommodation was booked within walking distance of venues

  • Hotels were selected with certified eco-labels or green buildings certifications

FOOD/CATERING

  • Single-use plastics/excessive packaging were avoided

  • Fresh, organic food was prioritised

  • Vegetarian or vegan menus were considered where practical

  • Local producers/suppliers were identified to optimise the collection and delivery of seasonal, low environmental impact food

  • Tap water was served in jugs or in glass bottles during rehearsal

  • Restaurants and convenience food was prioritised that was certified with eco-labels

PAPER/ELECTRONIC/MATERIALS

  • The amount of paper used was reduced and the paper used was recyclable

  • Clothing for performance or any props were participants' own, avoiding unnecessary purchase

  • For communications material and concert programmes, digital versions were prioritised
